Shocking disrespect at Staines war memorial

After such a wonderful show of respect from local people at the Remembrance Sunday service in Staines a couple of weeks back I was so shocked and upset to hear that a gang of yobs were throwing the poppy wreaths around that were placed at the war memorial.

It is such a shame that sections of our community behave in such a way and can be so disrespectful. They should be ashamed.

    Hi Mel,
Yes I was shocked to hear that too.
I have to admit I'm not one who would normally attend the service myself. For one thing, having young kids, the chances of me being up and dressed and out by 10.30 on a Sunday are pretty slim. But for another I'm never pro war. I'm very much of the Dulce et Decorum Est view, rather than the Corner of Some Foreign Field approach.
However, you can't fail to be moved by the young men who are giving their lives or limbs in Afghanistan, and their families. Or those of all eras who bravely fought. Very soon we'll have no living memories of the horror of the first World War, and those stories need to be told and heard by those of us who are so fortunate to never have experienced the hardship of those earlier times.
When I attended the Remembrance Sunday parade and service I was so moved by the numbers of people coming to show their respect to soldiers past and present, and to the families of those who've lost loved ones, that tears pricked my eyes. It was truly wonderful to see so many Staines people giving thought to those who've made the ultimate sacrifice, even if, perhaps, like me they have doubts about the wars themselves.
I can't make assumptions about the young men who were throwing the wreaths around, but I guess none of them are prepared to put their lives on the line for another. It's a peculiarly arrogant and ignorant thing to do and they've shown themselves up in this regard. Plus, as you say, it's shockingly disrespectful to those who've lost loved ones, comrades, or their own limbs.
I really hope these young men think hard about their actions and realise why they may have caused distress to so many people.
